dmyra returns with another couple of folk tinged pop experiments. With traces of glitchy electronics underpinning melody and drawling guitar and voice inflections, Soul Eyed Sister takes its place as a legitimate A-side. Yes My Dear dives into synthetics with droning distortions over micro-melodies and stuttering drum machines. Topics: dmyra, 4-4-2 music, e-single of the month club, folk, electronica
Pelican Daughters - Darkness Before Light The first in an ongoing series of releases of the back catalogue of Australian electronic music legend, Andy Rantzen. This is a never been released collection of tracks by the Pelican Daughters created in the early to mid-90s by Rantzen in collaboration with Anthony Maher and Justin Brandis. A suite of tracks ranging from floating ambience to dark atmospheres to pounding electronica. We're very proud to help this lost gem finally see the light of day. The suburbs of Sydney are no place for the feint-hearted, if Kate Carr's version of them is anything to go by. There is menace creeping below the lethargy, a disjointed existence punctuated by random bursts of slow electricity. The mind of a composer is slowly sublimated to their environment. Carr's usual blend of field recordings is here spliced with more 'musical' interludes to foreboding effect. The 4-4-2 Music e-Single of the Month Club brings you a virtual 7" record every month... The extended Telafonica family releases its second annual Christmas EP. Featuring the band and its various members' offshoot and side projects, Christmas cheer is attacked from all angles. Proceedings start with The Bells singing along to a brass band, the lyrics of the classic carol given a more theologically correct twist. Next up Eliza Magill goes for the acapella route in the grand tradition of carolling, only hers is breathtakingly spectacular instead of painfully monochrome. Blake...
No More Yesterdays likes to play with audio. From abstract noise to electronic folk, nothing is sacred. Here, a lone electric guitar awash in retro-chorus picks melodies atop droning chord structures, sometimes underpinning neo-folk vocalisations, sometimes flying solo. The perfect example of the 4-4-2 Music ethos - Dolmen Sniper's contribution to the e-Single of the Month Club is a sprawling wonder. Cut and paste instrumental folktronica on one hand, backed with the darkest of ambient drone pieces on the other. No regard is paid to the traditional genre boundaries resulting in a glorious 15 minutes to drag you across the terrain of contemporary music. A group of 4-4-2 Music artists have pooled their talents to create a soundtrack for the festive season. Luckily, there's nothing cringeworthy here, just post-electronica, anti-folk, naive-pop and other odd prettiness. Originally created as a giveaway CD EP for a show the artists put on together in December, 2008, now unleashed on the rest of the world in the same spirit of giving. Topics: telafonica, lessons in time, eliza magill, the bells, christmas, antifolk, post-electronica, naive...
Self-loathing never sounded so beautiful. Danny The Donkey wanders around the corners of his life and is not quite sure he likes what he sees. Cldscp twist their pop songs into abstract contortions of noise, fizz and electronics. The 7th album from the prolific Argentinians is the first for the 4-4-2 Music label. Topics: 4-4-2 Music, Cldscp, Danny The Donkey, electronica, abstract pop, Argentina
Two downbeat tracks from Telafonica. The Man With The Golden Sickle lays a bed of acoustic guitar and bass for the beats to crack over, before clarinet improvisations have a chance to massage the ears. Side One is another moody beast created around samples of raw pasta being dropped. Four brief interludes (so brief we can get all four tracks into the space of the regular two) from the mysterious Paradigm Of The Ages. Blips dance around each other in reckless abandon, almost dissolving into anarchy, but always kept from falling apart completely. Micro melodies appear and vanish at will. A departure from the usual electronic leanings, as 4-4-2 Music begins to truly branch out, and we are proud to present these 2 tracks of improvised zither tones. The tracks relate to mourning, the Alps, romanticism, Webern... Death III is made playing what are known as an elegie concert zither and a prime concert zither simultaneously. Concert zithers are also know as Alpine zithers; they're difficult, have a fingerboard with frets on one side. The elegie is a bit longer; the one in this... Topics: lo-fi, zither, folk, improvised

Moocha's track 'Mrs Crystal' receives the remix treatment from Stone3, best known for his guitarscapes and billowy melodies. Here the glitches collide with Moocha's original acoustic instrumentation, laying a honeyed bed for the vocals to melt into. The B-side sees Stone3 take full reign, making harsh guitars and jarring echo snares sound like the perfect place to dream. Telafonica ups the tempo and heads for the indie dancefloor with two tracks of boom blip blip. With screeching synths, pounding kicks and lo-fi edges, there's still a place for melodic catches and attention grabbing production. A little help from Luminarsi in the remixing department also goes a long way in bringing out the best in an old Telafonica track as well. Prolific and eclectic are two words often thrown at Tim Koch and his music, and this release will do nothing to stop that. A side Can You Offer throws sid-chip sounds into a mix of more complex digital timbres, rhythms abruptly shift and an overall mood of joy prevails. This is backed by Lonely In Shark Cage, and the ambiguous mood that title suggests is matched fully by the music - a rhythm that never quite lets you in, yet forces you to try - melodies that catch your attention then disappear... another stylistic sidestep - this time into the realms of guitar pop - as 4-4-2 music extends it's range to try and cover all the things we really love. bubblejuggler chimes in this month with two tracks of vaguely twisted guitar based pop. guitar amps hum and buzz, lo-fi noises try to sound hi-fi, hi-fi sounds try to be lo-fi. 'picasso's girl at her mirror' does mid-era flaming lips crashing into britpop through the shards of a picasso masterpiece. 'something about shadows' plays dark against... Topics: guitar pop, britpop
Following an EP of cover versions released a few months ago, Marek Gabriel Hruska returns with a couple of remixes of tracks from his forthcoming .:%?! EP. How does one artist manage to do alt. country and instrumental hiphop on one release and not sound schitzophrenic? dmyra pulls it off with aplomb, laying a sparse acoustic groove under a lowdown drawl before turning about face and pushing laptop buttons while out recording the sounds of his world. Pelican Daughters - Fishbones And Wishbones Between 1986 and 1988, using Portastudio technology, the Pelican Daughters were birthed with a collection of atmospheric and moody tracks at odds with the popular culture around them, but definitely pointing to the future. Some of those tracks were released on cassette in 1988 on the Cosmic Conspiracy Productions label and was then picked up by Kim Cascone's Silent Records for release on CD in 1991 with added tracks - the format found here. Craven Canary normally floats around cyberspace finding music she likes, then records herself singing duets with what she downloads. This time, she decided to reverse the process - and so placed a recording of her lone voice singing a simple melody for others to download and make up the accompaniment. These are two of the results. The first is a glitched up scramble of the accapella, where Lessons In Time used only the sounds from Craven Canary's recording, then chopped and processed them into... stephenfox crawls out of his london bedsit with two understated, yearning acoustic entreaties. A-side 'House On Fire' uses classic 60s licks undermined by fuzzed out vocals and melancholy minimalism. St Jambience is let out of the house at weekends. He heads to suburban beer barns and shreds over 80s cover songs. He's locked up for the rest of the week. So the music that pours forth is isolated and has a sense of paranoia being organised into controllable blocks. The detritus of links to the outside world - radio static, guitar tone quotation - seep in as dreams, both good and bad, seep out. 'The Quest For Love Aboard The Belafonte' is lead single from the album 'Love On The Second Stair'. It features the original version and three remixes. Actual Russian Brides push the track through abstract 8-bits and bouncing sub-bass. Karoshi redresses the song in his own lush chord arrangements and down-tempo groove. this set is almost exclusively freely available netlabel tracks i've collected over the last year or so. i also stuck in a brand new luminarsi track which he posted to some friends just last week. all are quite minimal which then means quite a lot of layering can happen without too much clashing. for most of it there's at least 2 tracks playing at any one time. for that reason, i can't really give a track order (i brought different bits from different tracks in and out all the way through), but...
